Armenia, Byelorussia, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine had followed the invitation while Teams of Azerbaidzhan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan and Uzbekistan could not attend the event due to lack of finances. The couples of Estonia could not get Russian entry visa in time.
The event was held in the biggest Sports and Congress Hall in St. Petersburg. The interest of the public in this event was overwhelming. Every evening performance was visited by about 2500 spectators besides the fact, that three events per day were performed: morning, matinee and evening. All age groups and classes of DanceSport, besides Seniors - hat the possibility to perform. The competition saw about 600 couples performing.
The central event was a Team Match were two adult couples and two youth couples competed in Standard and in Latin-American Dances. The following six teams were on the floor: Armenia, Byelorussia, Latvia, Moldova, St. Petersburg, Russia and the Ukraine.
The results:
1st Team Russia/Captain Vladimir Kuznetsov - 149.5 points
2nd Team St. Petersburg, Captain Ludmila Karpunina - 163,5 points
3rd Team Ukraine, Captain Dr. Sviatoslav T. Wloch - 222.5 points
followed by Byelorussia, Moldova, Latvia and Armenia.
The Panel of Judges: Mikhail Dogaev/Russia, Petro Gozun/Moldova, Araik Mkhoian/Armenia, Svetlana Pavlish/Ukraine, Vladimir Paraknevich/Byelorussia, Yuri Simonov/St. Petersburg, Aigars Swars/Latvia.
The event was organised by DanceSport Club "Olympia" from the City of Gatchina under Vladimir and Ludmila Karpunin. The umbrella was hold by Mr. Yuri Yarov, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of the Independent States. The competition was attended by Members of St. Petersburg Government, The Leningrad Region Government, representatives of business and the banking system. Famous pop singers and pop groups were involved in the frame program.
The second DanceSport CIS-Cup is already on schedule for 2001.
